Malaria Prevention Program
Helping to protect families and educate communities
What is malaria?
- Malaria is a parasitic disease spread by mosquitoes;
- Symptoms include fever, headache, vomiting and other flu-like symptoms;
- Malaria can be prevented and treated.
The burden
- Every 30 seconds a child in Africa dies from malaria;
- Globally, there are at least 300 million acute cases of malaria each year, causing more than 1 million deaths;
- 90% of these deaths occur in Africa, mostly children;
- It costs Africa $12 billion dollars per year in lost productivity.
Keys to malaria control
- Protection through insecticide-treated bed nets and anti-malarial drugs
- Education of communities on the importance and proper use of bed nets
- Mosquito control
- Treatment that is early and effective
What is the role of the American Red Cross in malaria prevention?
- To raise awareness of malaria and its impact around the world;
By mobilizing more than 700 Red Cross chapters and more than 1 million volunteers in the United States to promote and fundraise for malaria prevention.
- To educate communities in Africa and Asia on the proper use of bed nets;
By training volunteers in Africa and Asia, who will go house-to-house teaching their neighbors about the risk, prevention and treatment of malaria.
- To distribute bed nets to pregnant women and children in Africa;
By providing free bed nets during measles vaccination campaigns and emergencies.
- To determine the best methods of increasing usage of bed nets;
By conducting operations research following net distribution.
