Malaria Prevention Program
Helping to protect families and educate communities

xWhat is malaria?

  • Malaria is a parasitic disease spread by mosquitoes;
  • Symptoms include fever, headache, vomiting and other flu-like symptoms;
  • Malaria can be prevented and treated.

The burden

  • Every 30 seconds a child in Africa dies from malaria;
  • Globally, there are at least 300 million acute cases of malaria each year, causing more than 1 million deaths;
  • 90% of these deaths occur in Africa, mostly children;
  • It costs Africa $12 billion dollars per year in lost productivity.

Keys to malaria control

  • Protection through insecticide-treated bed nets and anti-malarial drugs
  • Education of communities on the importance and proper use of bed nets
  • Mosquito control
  • Treatment that is early and effective

What is the role of the American Red Cross in malaria prevention?

  • To raise awareness of malaria and its impact around the world;

By mobilizing more than 700 Red Cross chapters and more than 1 million volunteers in the United States to promote and fundraise for malaria prevention.

  • To educate communities in Africa and Asia on the proper use of bed nets;

By training volunteers in Africa and Asia, who will go house-to-house teaching their neighbors about the risk, prevention and treatment of malaria.

  • To distribute bed nets to pregnant women and children in Africa;

By providing free bed nets during measles vaccination campaigns and emergencies.

  • To determine the best methods of increasing usage of bed nets;

By conducting operations research following net distribution.
