Manatee County Chapter - YOUTH CORPS

AMERICAN RED CROSS EDUCATIONAL & SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES

As you plan your group’s activities for the upcoming year, the Manatee County American Red Cross welcomes your participation in the many educational and community service opportunities we offer.  Many of these can be tailored to your group’s age and interests.

The Red Cross mission is to help people prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies.   Some of the educational programs we offer are:

*Disaster Preparedness presentation- FREE presentations on how to prepare for natural disasters (hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, etc.) tailored to the age and interests of your group.

*Health & Safety presentations- FREE presentations on subjects tailored to the age and interests of the participants, such as HIV/Aids information and First Aid information for teens.

*International Humanitarian Law presentations- FREE presentation on international humanitarian law (Geneva Conventions) and International Red Cross relief activities.

*Health and Safety Classes- Participants receive Red Cross certification in Babysitting, First Aid, CPR, etc.  Length and cost of classes vary.

*Disaster Classes- Participants learn how to help in a disaster through free classes such as Introduction to Disaster, Shelter Operations, and Damage Assessment.

Some of the community service project opportunities for your group through Red Cross are:

*School chests for schools in under developed countries-Gather school supply items such as paper, crayons, rulers, and jump ropes for a needy classroom overseas. Red Cross will provide lists of items needed and will send the items for distribution through the International Red Cross.

*Comfort Kits for disaster victims-Gather personal care items such as toothbrush/paste, comb, soap, razors, etc. to be given to victims of fires or other disasters.  Red Cross will provide information on items needed, and will store and distribute kits to disaster victims.

*Backpack and school supplies for disaster victims-Provide a backpack filled with school supplies for children who have lost theirs in a fire or other disaster.  Red Cross will distribute your supplies to the victim.

*Penny drive for disaster victims or Armed Forces Emergency Services – Collect money to enable Red Cross to provide services to disaster victims or families of U.S. Military.

For those wishing to design and implement their own community service project, our staff can help provide information and guidance. For instance, one such project might be the planning, producing and performing skits for preschoolers about disaster preparedness or a health and/or safety subject.

We look forward to hearing from you regarding these opportunities to serve our community.  Please call Brandi Jones at 792-8686 for more information.

Please contact Debbie Tapp for more information about our Youth Corps Program.
