The South Manatee Sertoma Club held its annual awards and dinner banquet at the Bradenton Yacht Club, on June 29, 2006.  In recognition of another successful year of service, the South Manatee Sertoma Club, President Kevin Taylor, made numerous check presentations to assist the hearing and speech impaired.

The first presentation was made to the Community Center for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing of Manatee County (CCDHH) in the amount of $2,000 to assist with the purchase of hearing aids for children in our community.  The CCDHH offers a wide range of services and programs for Deaf, Hard of Hearing, late deafened, deaf blind, speech impaired, and hearing individuals to make it possible for all to communicate in the community.

The second check presentation, in the amount of $2,500, was made to the hearing impaired program at Jesse P. Miller Elementary SchoolRachel Kendzior, who teaches this program, accepted the check which will be used to purchase school supplies for the students and classroom for the 2006 – 2007 school year.

The South Manatee Sertoma Club also presented an additional $1,000 check to Rachel Kendzior toward the Macy’s Miracle Foundation which supports research to find a cure for their daughter and other children who suffer from Juvenile Dermatomyositis. Juvenile Dermatomyositis is a disease that causes a skin rash and weak muscles in children, which in turn are caused by inflammation in the blood vessels that lie under the skin and in the muscles.  It can also affect other areas such as the digestive tract, but usually, the worst symptoms are in the skin and muscles.  The Macy’s Miracle Foundation is raising money to find a cure for this extremely rare disease that effects only 3.1 children out of 1 million.

After the check presentations, President Kevin Taylor presented the prestigious Sertoman of the Year Award to Sue Sieg.  This is the first time in the history of the South Manatee Sertoma Club that a woman has been presented with the award.

The Sertoman of the Year Award recognizes outstanding Sertomans for exceptional service to the club and to the community at large. All nominees are evaluated on club activities, leadership, personal involvement in community activities, family and business activities, and other relevant marks of leadership.  Congratulations Sue!
